ZUMA Photographer Hazel Thompson Wins Care Award:
'Teens in Prison' the Toast of Perpy
September 13, 2006 - ZUMA Press, photographer Hazel Thompson receives the CARE International Award for Humanitarian Reportage 2006! Presented on September 6 at the Visa Pour l'image international photojournalism festival in Perpignon, France, the prestigious award honored Thompson's images of children imprisoned in the Philippines.
1994 led CARE France to create the CARE International Award for Humanitarian Reportage with the objective of paying tribute to the photographers/reporters who bear testimony to major humanitarian catastrophes all over the world at the risk of their lives.
Thompson's coverage exposes four prisons in and around the Philippines' capital, Manila. Exclusively capturing some of the estimated 68,000 children in adult prisons, she exposes voiceless victims who remain crammed together among sex offending adult inmates. Often illegally detained on trivial offense and then held on mere suspicion, many as young as nine years old live in tiny cells overcrowded with prisoners having to stand while others sleep on the concrete floor. In flooded damp chambers with little light and stifling heat, children's health becomes gravely affected; many develop skin conditions after spending months, even years in such filth.
ZUMA's Thompson asserts "as a female photographer I took a great risk going undercover and posing as an aid worker, gaining exclusive access into the prisons of the Philippines. I was able to capture a set of images that shows a reality, where out of society's sight, children are illegally imprisoned with out a voice in conditions that can only be described as 'Victorian'.
