Generation KKK to hit London
July 19, 2006 - After a very successful six month run at the prestigious St. Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art in Scotland, the provocative ZUMA Press exhibition, Generation KKK: Passing the Torch, by photojournalist James Edward Bates is going to London.
Generation KKK will show at London's SS Robin Gallery from August 2 through October 28, 2006.
Like the St. Mungo museum, the SS Robin will host a number of educational workshops in conjunction with the exhibition. Students and visitors will be encouraged to reflect on Bates' photography and explore themes such as hatred, nature vs. nurture and how symbols can be used to assert a groups' identity while intimidating others.
"We are proud to bring this important body of work to another receptive, international audience," said Scott Mc Kiernan, director of ZUMA Press. "As sectarian violence escalates around the world, the issues and themes that emerge from the Generation KKK collection are relevant more than ever before," he said.
Generation KKK is part of Bates' decade-long exploration of America's Ku Klux Klan. His 40 provocative black-and-white images reveal that far from being a historic institution associated only with the late 19th and early 20th century, the KKK is still alive in the 21st century and actively passing on its beliefs and traditions to a new generation of members.
"James' courage and tenacity is epic. On more than one occasion, he risked his life to bring the world a glimpse of what many thought was a bygone era of extremism. His perseverance has resulted in a very powerful body of work. The problem is far from gone or dead. Generation KKK is here," added Mc Kiernan.
