Award-winning War Photographer Joins ZUMA

Bill Putnam

October 19, 2005 - MOSUL, Iraq - Award-winning military photographer Cpl. Bill Putnam took a big step towards reconciling his passion for photojournalism with his obligation to show the Iraq war in a good light: he resigned and accepted an assignment from TIME Magazine!

The "public affairs specialist," who was once an Army Patriot missile launcher before he enlisted in military journalism school, just returned to Baghdad for his second tour. This time, he approaches his work with the no holds barred attitude of a civilian journalist who's backed by a top news magazine and represented by a world-class picture agency--ZUMA Press.

Putnam got his first taste of war photography in Kosovo and quickly became hooked on the thrill of conflict coverage. With only one 56mb card at his disposal, he says he learned how field edit on the fly and be VERY selective with what he keeps. The result is tight submissions of story-telling images.

"Bill's work is very strong. It's clear he takes risks and tries new things, even when the sh** hits the fan," says Ruaridh Stewart, ZUMA's picture desk manager. "He's a great asset to have in the field. We're honored to represent him... I think he'll do well."

Over the years, Putnam received numerous honors for his work including the 2003 Department of the Army Staff Sgt. Paul D. Savanuck Military Journalist of The Year, the 2002 National Guard Journalist of the Year, first place for photojournalism in the 2002 National Guard Journalism Awards, second place for story series in the 1999 National Guard Journalism Awards, among others. If you haven't yet noticed his work in publications across the nation, you certainly will soon.

Putnam is currently in Mosul, Iraq embedded with the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team out of Fort Wainwright, Alaska and available for select assignments through ZUMA Press. For more information please call Ruaridh Stewart or Trish Murphy at 949.481.3747.

To read more about how and why he made the switch to civilian journalism, be sure to check out his recent contribution to the Columbia Journalism Review.

Note to fellow photographers: Putnam is looking for an Rbgan sat modem. If you have one you're willing to part with, e-mail him at bravephotojournalist@hotmail.com.

Trusting Lives to Tiny Machines - by JIM GEHRZ/Minneapolis Star Tribune/ZUMA Press

Eighteen-year-old Charlie Russell joined his brothers, father, and over six million others who had little choice but to implant a pace maker or defibrillator to keep their hearts beating. To them, the recent flurry of safety alerts and recalls has had a rather sobering effect, proving that though the devices might be ingenious, they are also imperfect.
