JiwaFoto

JiwaFoto April 21, 2005 - San Clemente, CA
- ZUMA's editorial clients worldwide have looked on in wonder at how far broad our Asian coverage has become. With contributors like Indonesia's JiwaFoto agency, ZUMA offers timely news and features from across the region.

Founded by longtime ZUMA Press photojournalist, Sinartus Sosrodjojo in December 2001, JiwaFoto is now well established as the only major assignment, stock and photographer's agent in Indonesia that has regional reach.

Sosrodjojo works hard at tapping his years of U.S. newspaper and wire service photography experience to give back to his country and fellow shooters. He regularly hosts workshops on captioning, transmitting pictures and ethics. He also emphasizes to his photographers the importance of brining a local perspective to stories they cover.

"I always tell my photographers that JiwaFoto does not aim to compete with the wires or bigger agencies," says Sosrodjojo. "It's more advantageous to utilize our local knowledge to cover things differently and come up with features that explore all aspects of Asian life be it politics, culture, tradition, or religion."

His approach is definitely working. When the tsunami hit Indonesia and other parts of South Asia last year, JiwaFoto was among the first to transmit not only spot news photos, but also a touching features, such as one on children left orphaned by the monster wave.

ZUMA showcased the Aceh's Orphans by DENY/JiwaFoto on zReportage.com following which it ran in it's entirety on AOL VISIONS' In Focus. Many other powerful JiwaFoto essays are available for syndication by ZUMA Press, along with their stock portraits of prominent clerics, politicians, authors, celebrities, and more.

With parents unable to pay their tuition, many children aged nine and up are forced to drop out of school and seek work in West Java's tile factories. The youngsters earn roughly U.S. 50 cents per day.

According to UNICEF, there are 246 million child laborers around the world. In Asia-Pacific, 19 percent of children aged five to fourteen (127.3 million) work.
