Lady Bombers of Palestine

March 23, 2005 - San Clemente, CA - Lady Bombers of Palestine by ZUMA Press photojournalist Eyal Ofer is a striking and compelling essay on would-be suicide bombers. Ofer had exclusive access to photograph and interview female inmates at the Ha-Sharon prison in Israel. His photos and text shed light on the motivations of martyrs.

The inmates, all Palestinian women, are still alive because they changed their minds at the last moment, because they were arrested and or because their mission failed and they did not succeed at becoming martyrs.

Some of the prisoners chose to be martyrs to make amends for a father, brother, husband or lover who was a collaborator. Others chose martyrdom to escape becoming victims of honor killings. Still others, who were psychologically frail, it seemed to be a good way to commit suicide and at the same time become heroines in their country.

Perhaps the most compelling insight comes from the inmates themselves. The interviews and complete text, written by Manuela Dviri/ZUMA Press, and photos by Eyal Ofer/ZUMA Press, are available for immediate syndication. Please contact Trish Murphy at 949.481.3747 for more information.

American Women at War - Sacramento Bee Special Report
Two years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, America's military machine depends on women as never before, yet it has failed to address the issues presented by a truly integrated two-gender force. In this in-depth, four-part special report, syndicated exclusively by ZUMA Press, the Sacramento Bee uncovers the lingering problems at the front, and on the home front: the battlefields are barracks and mess halls. The weapons are innuendoes and threats. The enemy--fellow comrades in arms. Extensive text accompanies this photo reportage.

Ugly Road to Beauty - San Antonio Express-News Special Report
Beckoned by the promise of better bodies for 30 percent less than what it would cost in the U.S., thousands of patients cross the Texas border into Mexico where plastic surgery clinics are flourishing on the growing craze for makeovers. Find out how bargain border clinics sometimes deliver disasters.

Oklahoma City Bombing

Remembering the Oklahoma City Bombing - April 19, 1995

In the run-up to the 10-year anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, ZUMA editors complied a concise collection of relevant coverage from the disaster and its aftermath. Included is the iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning image by Charles Porter IV of fireman Chris Fields carrying one-year-old Baylee Almon out of what was left of the day care center. Published on cover of TIME Magazine, Porter's image quickly became the most popular icon to memorialize the tragedy. zReportage Update

Agent Orange: Justice is Blind

On March 10, 2005 a New York District court judge threw out a class action law suit brought forward by millions of Vietnamese soldiers and civilians against the chemical companies responsible for creating Agent Orange--the defoliant blamed for a wide range of health problems. Twenty-one years ago, a similar suit brought forward by American Vietnam War vets was settled out of court for $180 million. Is this justice?
