Top Photojournalist Mark Richards Joins ZUMA's Elite Roster |
 |
July 28, 2004 - San Clemente, CA - Multi-award-winning chameleon of photography MARK RICHARDS has joined
ZUMA's elite roster of assignment shooters. The Industry veteran is notorious for constantly reinventing himself to deliver a
fresh approach to editorial assignments, photo illustrations and portraits to serve the varied needs of editors and designers.
Richards joins ZUMA from Corbis and was represented by Contact Press before that. The San Francisco Bay-area photographer
says, "I made the switch to ZUMA because I wanted strong local representation with huge international reach.
ZUMA offers a good balance between the two. I also wanted an agency with staff that gets the digital age!"
His work is highly acclaimed and been selected for publication in Communication Arts Photography Annual 13 different times, most recently the 2004 issue.
"Mark is a passionate photojournalist with a designer's eye and first-class vision," says Scott Mc Kiernan, director and founder of
ZUMA Press. "He's the type of shooter we can count on for everything from a striking still life stock photo to in-depth essay on social issues.
We are proud to represent his unique talent and can't wait to see what he does next!"
Over the years, Richards' work has appeared in hundreds of leading media outlets and many ad campaigns. He has worked for TIME, Newsweek,
The New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian, People, Business Week, Money, Forbes, the AARP and the list goes on.
Richards is currently adding to one of his long-term editorial projects that began as a seven-state assignment for People Weekly documenting the growing
problem of childhood obesity. Since the story's publication, Richards has continued to investigate the impact of fast-food culture in the United States. Selects

Mary Kay Letourneau, the elementary school teacher who had sex with VILI FUALAAU, her former sixth-grade student, is scheduled for release from prison
this Wednesday, August 4. The 34-year-old married mother of four made headlines for having two children with Fualaau, who was 12 years old when their
relationship began in 1996.
Sex and scandal make this a hot topic for editors worldwide, and ZUMA represents numerous exclusive images that tell
the story better than any others.
Selects include the only known photos of:
Letourneau with her lover Fualaau on the day of her first release from jail and a day before she was arrested again for rape (1998)
Fualaau with their daughter a week after Letourneau went back to jail (1998)
Letourneau with their daughter Audrey during a prison visit--these photos were taken by the Peninsula Gateway; with over 180 images from this
take, they can easily be run together to create video of the 2003 visit

Making Good on a Promise

It's well documented that Vietnam's Hmong people aided American forces during the Vietnam War. It's also no secret that when we pulled out of Vietnam, we left
our "friends" behind to face persecution from the ruling Communists. Those who escaped fled mostly to Thailand, where they were grouped into refugee camps.
Decades later, the U.S. is owning up to promises it made to the Hmong. We are now assisting 15,000 Hmong refugees to relocate from the Wat Tham Krabok refugee camp
in Thailand to California, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
ZUMA photojournalist ANDY MANIS visited Wat Tham Krabok and documented the relocation process, capturing everything from residents
checking the daily postings of who has been cleared for relocation to teary good-byes when boarding the bus for the airport.

Haiti's Super Cops
Aristide's Lavalas party armed the ghettos of Port-au-Prince in a effort to resist rebels. It didn't work. Aristide is gone, but the gun-totting young men remain.
International forces try to disarm them, but it's Haiti's own ultra-aggressive crack police units that get the job done. To view the complete story, click here.
