Getty Partners With Time Inc.

March, 2003

Getty Images has partnered with Time Inc. to take over the licensing and management of the TimePix archives, which has floundered since Time Warner's merger with AOL in 2000.

Getty hopes to have all of the library's 450,000 digital images available online by the end of the first quarter of 2003. The jewel of the extensive TimePix collection is the photographic archive of Life and Time magazines, which includes iconic images by Margaret Bourke-White and Alfred Eisenstaedt. The library also includes celebrity photography from the DMI and ZUMA Press agencies and news photos from Reuters.

Getty says it will keep one researcher on hand to select and scan analog material as needed. 'It's a fabulous collection,' says one former TimePix employee. 'The name carries a lot of weight'.

Although much of the content is owned outright by Time Inc., the work TimePix represents as an agent could be withdrawn by copyright owners. Scott Mc Kiernan, owner of ZUMA Press, says photographers would be left with little revenue once once Time Inc., Getty and a Getty sub-agent take a percentage of sales. 'If we leave (ZUMA Press' pictures) in, there has to be a financial advantage', Mc Kiernan says. 'I can't see at the present moment any advantage to having Getty be our TimePix liaison.'
